Are you an author who thinks that the more you know about your story, the easier will be to write it?

What if I told you that the more you know, the more confused you’ll become?

As planners, we often want to be sure that we have all the pieces in place before we start to write. If we work out the entire story before we even start, writing it will be easier and faster.

In theory, this is true. But what happens in practice?

  1. You become so wrought up in the planning process that you become scared to start writing if you haven’t worked out everything.
  2. You become afraid that if the plan starts to shift, you won’t be able to handle the changes and you’ll have to do the planning all over again.
  3. You may be so focused on the plot that you lose sight of the story’s themes.

But if you find a balance between what you need to know to start writing the story and what you’ll figure out as you go, it will be easier to begin and easier to keep going.

Your outline doesn’t have to cover every detail at the start (though I’m sure you’ll come to it, eventually). You just need to nail down the key elements.
